Israeli Palestinians: The Unwanted Who Stayed

Writing in German, Theodor Herzl, the father of Zionism, titled his classic work on the future state for Jews "Der Judenstaat." In English it's translated "The Jewish State."

Not accurate. Had Herzl meant a Jewish state, he would have used the adjectival form "Judische Staat," implying that the new state was to be culturally Jewish, much as the U.S. is often called a Christian country. That is, the new state would observe Jewish holy days and holidays and adopt Hebrew as its official language.

But Herzl purposely used the possessive form "Der Judenstaat" to affirm that the new state was to literally belong to Jews worldwide, and only to Jews. It would be equivalent to declaring that the U.S. belonged exclusively to Christian-Americans.

So, what does all this linguistic hairsplitting have to do with life today in Israel? According to Jonathan Cook, a British journalist living in Israel, and the author of our most recent issue of The Link, everything.

Our Featured Issue from the Archive:

As Jonathan Cook points out in the current Link, one in 10 Palestinian citizens live in what are called “unrecognized villages”—that is, unrecognized by their own state. Many are Bedouin living in the desert region of the south, the Negev. In Israel’s early years, the Bedouin tribes—isolated by the military government from the rest of the country—were ordered by the army to move from their ancestral grounds. With amazing chutzpah, Israel now claims that these forcibly relocated Bedouin have no title deeds or historic connection to the lands they were transferred to and are therefore “squatters.” It has been seeking to evict them from their homes ever since. The plight of these particular Israelis was described in depth in an earlier Link by Ron Kelley, which we have chosen as the “Featured Issue.”
